Embattled former National Secretary of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) Muhabi Lungu has finally succumbed to pressure from the party to return a party vehicle which he had been illegally clinging onto since his removal as National Secretary last year and subsequent expulsion from the party on 31st January 2015.
The party had opened a docket for theft of motor vehicle against Muhabi. The vehicle, a Toyota Hilux with registration ALX 6970 was recently quietly taken to Woodlands Police Station through expelled former Deputy National Secretary Chembe Nyangu. The MMD collected the vehicle and has dropped the non-bailable case of motor vehicle theft and Woodlands Police have confirmed that the case is now closed.
It is widely believed that this fiasco caused the People’s Republic of China to reject Lungu’s appointment as Zambia’s Economic attaché at the Embassy in Beijing when a security check by the Chinese government revealed that Muhabi was facing a pending case of theft of motor vehicle. It is now rumoured that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is attempting to divert Muhabi’s diplomatic appointment to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
