The Zambia U23 national football team has been placed in Group A of the Africa U23 Cup of Nations along with hosts Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia following a draw conducted in Cairo on Monday.
Zambia qualified for the tournament following their wins against Botswana and Ivory Coast in the second and third qualification rounds respectively.
Zambia’s men’s Olympic football team defeated Botswana via a 3 – 1 aggregate scoreline before they eliminated favourites Ivory Coast 4 – 3 on post match penalties following goalless draws over two legs.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Kalusha Bwalya described the draw as tough.
“The draw has been done and we cannot say there is an easy group. We always knew that both groups would be tough,” Kalusha said.
Teams placed in Group A will play their group stage matches at the 60,000 capacity Stade Leopold Sedar Senghor while the 5000 seater Stade Carolyn Face will host Group B teams.
Group B comprises Egypt, Algeria, Mali and Nigeria.
The final tournament takes place from 28 November through 12 December 2015 with the top three booking their Olympics places.
