Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama is focused on playing for Kenya in Sunday’s African Nations Cup qualifier against Zambia after his recent transfer move to Tottenham fell through.
The Kenya skipper also said he looked forward to resuming his game with Southampton after playing for his country against Zambia and in the midweek friendly against Equatorial Guinea in Nairobi.
Wanyama joined the Kenya team in training on Thursday and said he had put behind him the disappointment of failing to have his request to join Tottenham during the transfer window, which was turned down by the Southampton manager Ronald Koeman.
“I am ready to resume my international duty with Kenya. The last few days have not been good for me. Sometimes it is hard to go through such an experience, but I have been through this before and I know how to deal with it. I am good and ready to focus on the game on Sunday,” Wanyama told reporters.
The Kenyan international denied he was unlikely to get along with his Southampton teammates when he gets back to the English club, after he was left out of the team’s 3-0 premiership win over Norwich last Sunday.
“I am a Southampton player and still under contract with the club. Hopefully when I get back I just want to focus on Southampton and help the team get back into their winning ways.
Wanyama said he was also looking forward to lead the Harambee Stars in beating Zambia in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations match after drawing 1-1 with Congo in the opening game in June.
“Zambia is a very good side and we are expecting a tough match against them. Hopefully we can go through this by getting a positive result,” Wanyama said.
“We have a very good squad and we have been training together for a long time. We are eager to see Kenya make a return to the Africa Cup of Nations finals. It’s been now over 13 years since we last featured in the competition.
Zambia, the former African champions, kicked off their qualifiers with a draw against Guinea Bissau at home in June.
