Shameful scenes at Shinde…as Wanderers, Zesco match abandoned

MUFULIRA Wanderers supporters yesterday rioted and forced the abandonment of the MTN-FAZ Super League Week 19 match at Shinde Stadium after defending champions, Zesco United had scored.

With ‘Mighty’ boasting of an unbeaten home record this season, the Wanderers fans, sensing danger of finally losing at Shinde, resorted to throwing an assortment of missiles onto the pitch after Winston Kalengo had given Zesco the lead on 20 minutes.

Zesco forward, Mwape Mwelwa got injured in the process as he was hit by an object.
Referee Gladys Lengwe had to stop the match and sought refugee in the dressing room as the Zesco players also followed suit.
The game was abandoned in the 31st minute.

Police, who had to fire teargas canisters to disperse the riotous fans, called for reinforcement to escort the visiting team out of Mufulira.
In the reverse fixture, Zesco, who still lead the table on 40 points, inflicted Wanderers’ heaviest defeat of the season so far, 4-1 in Ndola.
The Football Association of Zambia disciplinary sub-committee will soon make a ruling on this abandoned match.

  1. Stupid fans. How do you become unruly in the 20th minute of the match? You may foolishly have cost your team a point or even three , a disciplinary action and easy three points for zesco.
