PRESIDENT Lungu says Kasama Central Member of Parliament (MP) Geoffrey Mwamba does not represent the Patriotic Front (PF) in Parliament following his appointment as United Party for National Development (UPND) vice-president.
The President said the Zambian constitution is clear about MPs who cross the floor and that it does not allow dual membership.
The head of State said this in an interview with journalists in Lusaka yesterday at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport before his departure for Uganda for a state visit.
“I didn’t know that Mr Mwamba is still a member of the PF. In the interest of democracy, let him go in peace. It is up to him to choose between the PF and the UPND.
“It is either he remains in the PF or goes to the UPND but he should understand that the constitution does not allow dual membership and it is very clear about that,” President Lungu said.
He, however, said he would allow legal minds and Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini to guide on the matter.
The President wished Mr Mwamba and the UPND well, saying the country’s democracy needs a strong opposition.
“I wish Mr Mwamba well with his money and his arrogance and I hope he is going to make the UPND popular just like Mr Richard Kapita has done to the PF,” the head of State said.
