THE High Court has sentenced a Malawian national, Susan Musukwa to eight months imprisonment for manslaughter.
Sitting in Kasama yesterday, Judge Mwamba Chanda sentenced Musukwa for causing the death of a day-old baby.
Facts of the matter are that in October 2014, Moses Kaonga married Susan and settled in Vumbo village in Mafinga district of Muchinga Province.
After living together for four months, the accused went back to Malawi but on January 6 this year, she was brought back to Zambia by her relatives because she was pregnant.
Upon her return, her husband accused Susan of getting pregnant before they got married, but accepted to stay with her.
On January 10 this year, while her husband was away at work, the accused gave birth to a baby in the house and went and dumped it in the toilet and lied to her husband upon his return that she had a miscarriage.
The following day, the accused went to Malawi and it was later discovered that she had thrown the baby in the toilet where it was retrieved while it was still breathing but it later died.
The accused was later arrested at Muyombe Police Station.
Before Judge Chanda yesterday, the accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to eight months simple imprisonment.
Judge Chanda also ordered for the deportation of the convict immediately after she completes serving the sentence.
