The Zambia Prisons Service has bought 8-thousand uniforms for distribution to all prisoners.
A team of officers has since been dispatched to distribute uniforms to prisoners in the North Western province.
Commissioner of Prisons Percy Chato says the officers who went to inspect poor sanitary conditions at the Zamezi prisons also carried uniforms for more than 600 inmates.
Mr Chato has revealed that in this year’s budget government has allocated One point 8 million kwacha for procurement of prisoners uniforms and improvement of prisons conditions countrywide.
He was speaking in an interview with ZNBC news.
The Commissioner of Prisons said Zambia has a prison population of 18 thousand 5 hundred and 66 inmates out of which more than 13 thousand prisoners are convicted persons.
Meanwhile, Mr Chato has observed that poor sanitary conditions in prisons are a result of congestion.
