Zambia defender Donashano Malama is eligible to play in the forthcoming 2017 Africa Cup qualifier against Guinea Bissau despite his red card at the just-ended Cosafa Cup tournament in South Africa.
Cosafa Chief Operations Officer Sue Destombes confirmed in an interview that Malama’s red card will not be extended to other Caf sanctioned competitions.
“No, suspensions are particular to this competition only unless there is an additional sanction which Cosafa relays to Caf – this is not the case insofar as Donashano is concerned,” Destombes said.
Malama was sent-off in the Cosafa Cup Plate final on May 26 against Malawi when he received his second yellow card of the match after he elbowed Frank Banda in the 75th minute.
Zambia lost that match 1-0.
Malama played in two of Zambia’s three games at the Cosafa Cup in the quarterfinal 5-4 post-match penalty loss to Namibia and Plate final to The Flames.
The news means Malama will be available for Zambia’s opening Group E qualifier against Guinea Bissau on June 13 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
Last January, the Nkana defender missed Zambia’s opening Group B match at the Africa Cup in Equatorial Guinea after acquiring two yellow cards in the qualifiers.
