The Non Governmental Organizations Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has demanded that Government rescinds its faulty decision to take constitution amendments to Parliament and ensure that a national referendum is held before the 2016 general elections.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka this morning, NGOCC Board Chairperson Sara Longwe says the country still has enough time to hold the constitution referendum before the 2016 tripartite elections.
Ms Longwe says the changing of goal posts and the dilly-dallying tactics being employed by the PF government are a clear demonstration that they lack the necessary political commitment to facilitate the enactment of a truly people driven constitution.
She says the NGOCC demands that the PF government listens to people’s consistent demands for the enactment of a new constitution before 2016.
Ms Longwe states that trying to bully the whole country over a faulty process will not yield Zambia any benefits and is an affront to the promotion of a truly democratic dispensation that should accelerate national development and peace.
She adds that as an organization they are deeply saddened and shocked with the PF and President Edgar Lungu for betraying the Zambian people who were promised a people driven constitution.
Ms. Longwe says by enacting the constitution in a phased manner, the PF and President Lungu are disregarding the wishes of the Zambian people who have consistently insisted that the new constitution must be adopted through a referendum.
She further states that by amending the constitution in a phased manner, the PF would be de-campaigning themselves.
