A 23-YEAR-OLD house servant of Kawambwa has died after spending a night in a non-functional deep freezer after the owner of the house allegedly refused to open the door for him.
Luapula Province deputy commissioner of police Webby Shula said in an interview yesterday that Blessings Chali of Low Density was found dead in a disused freezer on Thursday around 06:00 hours.
Mr Shula said on Wednesday around 18:00 hours, Mr Chali and his fellow domestic worker Bernard Choongo asked for help from their employer to visit relatives in Matelo village.
“Permission was granted with caution that they should not come back late,” he said.
He said the two returned around 23:00 hours, allegedly in a drunken state, and they were not allowed to enter the house.
“The friend suggested that they sleep in the shelter within the yard but the deceased refused and remained at the veranda near the fridge,” Mr Shula said.
Mr Shula said it is suspected that the deceased felt cold and decided to keep himself warm in the freezer but suffocated and died.
He said police are, however, investigating the matter to establish the actual cause of death.
And MUBANGA NONDO in Ndola reports that a 73-year-old man of Shikulu Musonda village in Mbala has died after drinking a highly potent spirit.
Northern Province deputy commissioner of police Alfred Nawa confirmed the incident and identified the victim as Sefelino Mulenga.
The incident occurred on Thursday at around 03:00 hours and the matter was reported to police by the deceased’s son.
“We have an unnatural death where a 73-year-old man died suddenly after returning from drinking kachasu. The relatives have been advised to bury the body as no foul play is suspected,” Mr Nawa said.
