The Livingstone Magistrate Court has imprisoned a Livingstone man Parshottam Girdham- Vaghela ,for one year with hard labour on two separate counts of illegal disposal of waste.
Mr. Girdham-Vaghela will concurrently serve one year sentence on count one and six months on count two.
This means that Mr Girdham- Vaghela will only be incarcerated for one year.
Meanwhile, the Livingstone Magistrate court has ordered that the illegal dump-site created by Mr Girdham- Vaghela, be cleaned up within seven days.
The court warned that failure by Mr Girdham- Vaghela to do so would result in issuing a warrant of distress being served on him.
This is in a matter where Zambia Environmental Agency-ZEMA- took Mr Girdham- Vaghela to court on two counts of disposing wastes contrary to the law.
On first count, Mr Girdham- Vaghela was charged for managing waste in a manner that triggers adverse effects contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
On second count ,Mr Girdham- Vaghela was charged for conducting open-air burning of waste without written consent contrary to ZEMA’s Licensing Regulations.
Mr Girdham- Vaghela pleaded guilty to the charges last week.
This is according to a statement released Monday to ZNBC News in Lusaka by ZEMA -Principal Information and Communication Officer Irene Lungu-Chipili.
