A civic leader in Zambezi district has appealed to government to consider deploying local teachers to the district.
Chinyingi – Mapachi ward Councillor Isaac Mwila says government through the ministry of education should deploy more local teachers to the area during the forth coming teacher deployment exercise.
Councillor Mwila said in an interview that this will reduce on the number of teachers abandoning schools on pretence of being married.
He said that most teachers only work for a short time before they request for transfers to go back, a situation he said was not helping the district.
“The ministry of education should give priority to the local teachers who will likely not desert the schools,” said Mwila
Zambezi district education board secretary Douglas Samukange said the district has suffered a shortage of about 105 teachers from 2009 to 2015 due to transfers by ‘outside’ teachers.
Mr Samukange said deploying local teachers will help improve the perfomance of pupils in the district.
Government has announced that it will employ about 5000 teachers this year to meet the deficit in learning institutions across the country.- Zanis
