Lusaka, (TUESDAY, 24TH March 2015) — His Excellency Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President of the Republic of Zambia has declared a day of National Mourning in honour of the late Mr. Willie Nsanda who died at Milpark Hospital in South Africa today.

President Lungu has directed the Secretary to the Cabinet to make necessary arrangements for a Day of National Mourning on the day when burial would take place.

At the time of his demise, Mr Nsanda was a member of the Patriotic Front (PF) Central Committee and Chairman of the Road Development Agency (RDA). He also previously served as Deputy Minister under the MMD government. The President used his discretion to grant a State Funeral in recognition of the great service Mr Nsanda rendered to the nation especially in business and politics.

The President has since dispatched to South Africa, PF Secretary-General Mr Davies Chama and another member of the central committee, Mr. Samuel Mukupa to help with funeral arrangements.

The President regrets that the death of Mr Nsanda has robbed the party of a great party mobiliser who helped the party win the 2011 elections and participated in various party activities.

“In moments of tragedy like this, only God is the comforter because there is nothing that can give you solace other than our belief that God is the ultimate giver of life. Moments like this will always remind us of our mortality and thereby afford us an opportunity to express love and fraternity to one another,” the Head of State said.

“Our nation and PF have lost one of their dedicated sons. Mr. Nsanda courageously endured the pain he carried to ensure that late President Michael Chilufya Sata was succeeded by a leader who would carry forward his vision to transform Zambia into a better place. Nothing can diminish our sense of profound and enduring loss we feel as the PF family. Our prayers are with the Nsanda family. This is indeed a moment of our deepest sorrow. Yet it must also be the moment of our greatest determination.”
