THE Lusaka Magistrate’s Court has granted convicted Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Maxwell Mwale a K20,000 bail pending appeal to the High Court.
This is in a matter in which Mwale has appealed to the High Court against his conviction and 12-month jail sentence slapped on him by Lusaka magistrate Lameck Mwale for abuse of authority of office.
Mwale who has been in custody for over a week, applied to the court to grant him bail pending appeal.

“I have carefully considered your application and seeing that you have spent some time in jail, I hereby grant you bail,” magistrate Mwale said.
The former minister was found guilty of abusing the authority of office when he interfered in the issuance of mining licences to Zhongui International Mining Industry Group Limited.
But the court acquitted Mwale in the other count after the prosecution failed to prove that the he was involved in the importation of bicycles.
United Party for National Development president Hakainde Hichilema attended Mwale’s bail hearing.
