CATHERINE Phiri’s opponent in the World Boxing Council (WBC) title fight Jessica Gonzalez of Mexico has withdrawn citing personal reasons.
And WBC has stripped the interim title from Gonzalez.
According to a letter from WBC president Mauricio Sulaimán Saldivar addressed to Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP) director of operations Christopher Malunga the belt is vacant.
Catherine, who is also WBC silver bantamweight champion, will wait for a new opponent.
“I am sorry to inform you that Canello Promotions has notified WBC that Jessica Gonzalez has decided to vacate the interim championship and will no longer continue as champion.
“As WBC, we will look into this division and notify you the steps very soon. I am very sorry for the long period of time that this process took and for the final results,” the letter reads.
Malunga lashed out at Gonzalez and her promoter.
“WBC has stripped off the title from Jessica Gonzalez, the interim champion. She [Jessica] refused to defend the belt against Catherine despite the fight being a mandatory defence,” Malunga said.
The fight was set in April.
