GOVERNMENT has made a passionate appeal to the corporate world to bail out Exodus Boxing Promotions to stage Esther Phiri’s comeback fight against Sandra Almeida of South Africa next month.
Esther will be making her second appearance in the ring on March 14 at the Government Complex in Lusaka since returning from a brief retirement.
Sports Minister Vincent Mwale said Exodus were facing financial challenges and should be helped to host the Women International Boxing Association (WIBA) and World Boxing Federation (WBF) welterweight unification title fight.
Mwale said in Lusaka yesterday that Esther was a good boxer and Zambians should sponsor her comeback fight for it to be a success.
“We all know Esther, she is a good boxer. We can all remember her performance before she retired, and she is now back let’s support her,” he said.
He said the corporate world needed to give necessary support to Exodus to help meet their budget before March 14.
The minister added that Government alone could not manage to support all sport disciplines, hence the need for the business community to come on board.
“Sponsors should come on board and support minor sport, Government will be grateful and together we can do more for the development of sport,” he said.
