President Edgar Lungu says the talks he held with visiting Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete will go a long way in strengthening relations that exist between the two countries.
President Lungu has since described the talks as successful stating that he is satisfied with the discussion held at State House this evening.
The head of state has reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to the bilateral relations and fraternal ties that exist between Zambia and Tanzania.
The President was speaking at the State Banquet at Lusaka’s Pamodzi Hotel held in honour of the Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete who is in the country for a two-day state visit.
President Lungu noted that his counterpart is visiting Zambia at the time he is preparing to leave office after what he called a distinguished tenure of office of President in that country.
He stressed that President Kikwete has rendered a sterling service to his country as witnessed by the impressive economic development and transformation that is taking place in Tanzania.
He said it is impressing to host President Kikwete as the two countries are seeking common solutions to the challenges affecting them.
He said Zambia and Tanzania have a shared heritage and culture plus similar political, economic and social aspirations.
President Lungu observed that joint projects such as the Tanzania-Zambia Railways and the Tanzania-Zambia Mafuta oil pipe line have continued to strengthen and deepen the relationship between the two countries.
He said from the deliberations held today it shows that much more benefits could be derived from ventures such as TAZARA and TAZAMA if greater investments and efforts are applied.
And President Kikwete stated the two leaders discussed matters concerning the reviving of the TAZARA to make it a well-functioning railway line for the benefit of the two countries and the region as well as and TAZAMA pipe line , the Dar es Salaam port and the Tunduma-Nakonde border post.
He said the two leaders further explored a number of new areas of cooperation and other matters of mutual interest to the two countries adding that he is fully satisfied with the resolutions.
Dr Kikwete stated that the meeting also underscored the role of the Joint Permanent Commission as a vehicle to enhance bilateral relations between Zambia and Tanzania.
The state banquet was attended by First Republican President Kenneth Kaunda, Vice President Inonge Wina, Cabinet and Deputy Ministers and senior government and party officials.
