33 year old man slapped with 22 year imprisonment for incest

Mansa, February 17, ZANIS— A 33 year old man of Katota Village in Chief Mabumba’s Chiefdom in Mansa District has been sentenced to 22 years imprisonment with hard labour for incest.

The High Court sitting in Mansa sentenced Cornelius Mofya for incest contrary to Section 159 Cap 87 of the Penal Code of the Laws of Zambia

Particulars of the offence are that Mofya between January 2012 and September, 2013 in Mansa had unlawful carnal knowledge of his 10 year old daughter.

In mitigation, Mofya pleaded with the court to be lenient as he was the first offender and had learnt his lesson from the time he was in prison.

But in sentencing, High Court Judge Mubanga Kondolo said incest is a very serious offence which carries a minimum sentence of 20 years and maximum of life.

He said many people fail to understand how a man would sleep with his daughter when his wife was around.

Justice Kondolo said the offence was a sickening one and sentenced the accused to 22 years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from date of arrest.
