North-western Province Minister Dawson
Kafwaya has assured Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) that
government will help in discussions to facilitate speedy completion of the Kabompo hydro power station in the province.
Mr Kafwaya said government appreciates the huge investment the company is carrying out because it will benefit the people in the province and the country at large.
The minister who is on tour of developmental projects in the province said this when he inspected the hydro power station site yesterday.
He said the project will not only change the face of the area but also create employment opportunities for the people in the province.
Mr Kafwaya implored the company to consider giving priority to local people when offering employment especially for jobs that do not need specialized skills.
And Kabompo Hydro Power Station Project Manager, Vincent Nyirenda told
the minister that the company is facing some few challenges to progress.
Mr Nyirenda said the company has some challenges in acquisition of project land such as title, consents and joint land management agreements.
He added that finalization of key project documents and securing relevant consents, permits and licenses are also a challenge.
Mr Nyirenda said once the project is operational, it will enhance socio economic empowerment and capacity building for the locals and also enhance human development objective as outlined in the Sixth National Development Plan by building education infrastructure around the project area.
The Copperbelt Energy Corporation has so far spent 30.3 million dollars on the project which will generate 40 megawatts of power and is expected to start commercial operations by March 2018.
