A 21-YEAR-OLD housewife of Namembo village in Mazabuka is nursing multiple body injuries after her 22-year-old husband hacked her with a machete following a marital dispute.
After leaving his wife for dead, the man, supposedly haunted by his conscience, later decided to take his life by hanging himself to a tree within Namembo village.
Outgoing Southern Province commissioner of police Mary Chikwanda said the incident happened a fortnight ago in Chief Naluwama’s area in Chikankata.
She identified the woman as Yvonne Mubiana and the deceased as Brywell Kanene Hangoma, both of Namembo village.
“On January 19, this year, around 23:00 hours, Yvonne Mubiana complained that she was axed by her husband Bryson Kanene Hangoma…the victim sustained multiple injuries in the head, left thigh and right hand.
“She was issued with a medical form and rushed to Mazabuka district hospital where she was admitted,” she said.
Ms Chikwanda said a day after the incident, Mr Hangoma, who was reported missing, was found hanging lifeless onto a tree.
“It’s like upon seeing that his wife was badly injured, the man ran into the bush and took his life. Police officers visited the scene and retrieved his body, which was found hanging to a tree with a rope round the neck,” she said.
The police chief appealed to couples not to resort to violence but dialogue when resolving marital disputes.
