FOURTEEN people are nursing serious injuries at St Paul’s Mission Hospital in Nchelenge after the vehicle they were travelling in hit into a wall fence and flipped after the driver failed to negotiate a corner.
Luapula Province commissioner of police Malcolm Mulenga said in an interview yesterday that the 14 passengers were sitting on top of a Mitsubishi Canter truck laden with planks.
Mr Mulenga said the accident happened around 21:30 hours on Saturday along Nchelenge-Mbereshi road after the driver dodged the barrier to avoid paying council levy.
“The driver dodged the barrier and used another road within the boma and when he reached a T-junction, he failed to negotiate and hit into the wall fence of Lake View Lodge and the vehicle flipped,” he said.
Mr Mulenga said the accident involved a Mitsubishi Canter registration number ABG 1805 which was being driven by a man only identified as Felix of Nchelenge.
He said the driver of the vehicle is currently on the run. Police have launched a manhunt
“Among the injured, five are juveniles while the rest are adults,” Mr Mulenga said.
He said the vehicle has been impounded.
