–Twenty households of Koni Cooperative in Mwansabombwe district in Luapula Province have received heifers from Heifer International.

The cooperative has received 40 heifers with two heifers given to each household under the Luapula Province Livestock Development Programme.

The Luapula Province Livestock Development Programme is a programme introduced to restock the province with cattle, goats and chickens.

ZANIS reports that speaking during the handover of the heifers to beneficiaries, Mwansabombwe District Livestock Production and
Extension Officer, Singa Donatello, said the heifer project in the district will use a pass-on system where every household will pass on heifers to another family once the heifers have reproduced so that more families benefit.

Mr Donatello said the district will also receive over 300 goats, adding that all the beneficiaries have been fully trained in improved
cattle production and have since signed a binding contract that will ensure liability to the heifers.

He urged the beneficiaries to ensure that they uphold the values imparted in them during the training in order to make sure that the
heifers do not die.
