Local Government and Housing Permanent Secretary Stanford Msichili has commended the local contractor working on township roads in Ndola for doing quality works.
Mr. Msichili said Copperfields Mining Services Limited, the company that has been contracted to rehabilitate roads around Ndola city, has so far done a commendable job.
He said the contractor was one of the few Zambian companies that have done quality jobs.
He said most of the local contractors have been letting government down through doing shoddy works.
Mr. Msichili said he was impressed with the quality of works on the roads done by Copperfields Mining Services Limited.
He said this after touring roads that are being worked on in Ndola.
He further said government remains committed to ensuring that the roads that were being worked countrywide were completed noting that a good road network was key to foster national development.
And Copperfields Mining Services Limited Site Manager Isaac Chirwa said his company has so far done about 4 kilometres out of the 6.8 km of road it was contracted to do.
Mr. Chirwa said his company was however facing some challenges along Miyombo road where some people with business structures along the same road refused to pave way for drainages.
Meanwhile, Mr. Msichili has called on all councils to ensure that by-laws on road construction are enforced so that people do not encroach on land reserved for roads.
"I urge all councils to enforce the by-laws. We cannot have people encroaching land where we are supposed to have proper roads with drainages," he said.
Mr. Msichili said the council should move in and demolish structures whose owners are resisting moving in order to pave way for drainage and road construction.
He said no structures should be put up without approval from the council.
