Govt calls for accountability from polling officers
Lukulu, January 8, 2015, ZANIS — The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in Lukulu District has warned and cautioned polling staffs to participate in the forthcoming presidential elections to be highly disciplined.
ZANIS reports that Lukulu District Electoral Officer Alfred Mungalu says discipline is cardinal in any human endeavour hence polling officers needed to uphold discipline in their line of duty.
Mr. Mungalu urged the poll staffs not to conduct themselves in non-partisan activities especially before and during elections.
He said this when he met polling staffs at St Columbus Edmond Rice Hall y in Lukulu district yesterday.
Mr. Mungalu said ECZ wants to run these elections in a free and fair manner hence those found wanting will be disciplined accordingly.
He also cautioned them that they are expected to be sober minded during the elections.
The DEO also encouraged the officers to exercise teamwork on the polling day which he said is an important and valuable instrument in the elections process.
He further pointed out that these briefings to elections officers are vital for they provide a platform to see whether they can run elections hence called on them to take the briefings process seriously.
In another development, 282 voters’ cards were replaced in the just ended voters’ card replacement in the Lukulu District.
Lukulu District Electoral Officer Alfred Mungalu attributed the low turnout to the vastness of the district and long distances to the centers.
