The Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) has commenced a programme aimed at preventing road traffic accidents this festive season.
RTSA Information Officer Fredrick Mubanga told ZANIS in an interview that the enforcement unit has instituted highway patrols in strategic points countrywide where road carnages are rampant.
Mr. Mubanga said the strategy which the agency was using to curb traffic accidents is speed management.
He said RTSA was mounting patrols on highways in order to bring sanity on the roads.
“We are alert because in the festive season drivers tend to be over speeding, so we have already moved in to ensure that no fatalities are recorded,” he said.
He said the agency has positioned itself in such a way that all major highways in the country were covered.
He said drivers should stick to traffic rules and regulations to prevent unnecessary accidents now that the festive period is climaxing.
And Zambia Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the police will soon issue a comprehensive statement on what they were doing to maintain law and order in the country this festive season.
