Acting President Guy Scott says he will not resign.
Reacting to calls by Cabinet Ministers who have passed a vote of no confidence in his leadership and calling for his resignation for allegedly working against the interests of the nation and the Patriotic Front ,Dr Scott says there is no provision in the constitution for such a demand.
Dr Scott explains that his position as acting president is purely by operation of Article 38(2).
He says there is no provision in Article 38(2) for removal of an acting President.
Dr Scott adds that any Cabinet meeting can only be called by him as acting president through the Secretary to the Cabinet, and that any other meeting purporting to be a Cabinet meeting constitutes a serious act of treason.
Dr Scott says as acting President he remains committed to following the constitution of Zambia, and ensuring a peaceful, legal, transparent and constitutional presidential by-election.
He states that he will not be blackmailed to allow the illegal use of Government resources for partisan interests, and will abide by the law.
Dr Scott adds that the rule of law must be respected by all well-meaning Zambians to maintain the country’s legacy as the torch bearer of democracy in Africa.
