—————————————- Government has issued a grant of K50, 000 to Five women’s clubs in Chibombo and Chisamba Districts.
The grant is part of the Women Empowerment Programme which is being implemented by the Department of Community Development.
Nkotuchili, Njeema, and Chikupu women clubs of Katuba area in Chibombo District and Munumbwa and Ujama women clubs of Chisamba District received K10, 000 each.
And speaking when he handed over the cheques to the leaders of the Women’s Clubs, Chibombo District Commissioner Felix Mang’wato urged the clubs to utilize the grants on the projects they had applied for.
Mr Mang’wato said the grants would not yield the intended purpose if the clubs decide to divert the funds to other projects rather than those which are on their project proposals.
He further cautioned the leaders of the women’s clubs against sharing the money amongst themselves at the expense of investing in the projects.
Meanwhile, Mr Mang’wato said government will continue to empower women with necessary capital to enable them start up projects.
He said this is because government realizes that empowering women economically plays an important role in alleviating poverty especially in rural areas.
He said government through the Department of Community Development is also implementing Village Banking Programme in Mwachisompola area adding that this will soon be rolled out to other parts of the district.
Mr Mang’wato said the implementation of such empowerment programmes is an indication that government is committed to alleviating poverty in rural areas through the provision of start-up capital.
And speaking on behalf of other women’s clubs, Munumbwa Women’s Club Secretary Esther Banda thanked government for the grant.
Ms Banda urged government to continue empowering women economically saying the empowerment programmes have proved to be life changing among women.
