Vet department alerts livestock farmers

Mkushi, December 8, 2014, ZANIS—The Veterinary department in Mkushi  has implored farmers in the district to scale up livestock disease preparedness.

Mkushi District Veterinary Officer  Mitson Simuyala told ZANIS today that there was need for the farmers to be geared as the months of December and January were peak periods for tick borne cattle diseases.

He said last month his office had recorded  seven cases of Anaplasmosis  cattle disease of which six were treated and one had died.

He said in October the district recorded 13 cases of East Coast Fever cattle disease where five died and eight were treated.

Mr. Simuyala said the department had in this view recorded 361 vaccinations on cattle belonging to small scale farmers against lumpy skin disease over the past two months.

He also disclosed that the Newcastle poultry disease had affected 754 chickens in the first three  quarters of this year adding that 278 chickens had since died.

And in revealing the dog bite situation, Mr. Simuyala said that his office had recorded a total of 57 cases during the period under review.

He further added that the department had carried out 1,804 dog vaccinations from January this year to date explaining that the move was being applied as a measure to reduce the chances of the rabies disease spreading.
