—-The Zambia National Union of Teachers (ZNUT) in Solwezi district has warned teachers against involving themselves in political campaigns because they are civil servants expected to serve and support the government of the day.
ZNUT District Chairperson, Setty Maseka, told ZANIS in Solwezi in a statement that the union has lately observed that some teachers in the district have been entertaining politicians in their schools while others are seen on local media discussing political issues.
Mr Maseka said while teachers have the right to belong to any political party, they are expected to conduct themselves as professionals and support programmes of the government of the day.
Mr Maseka appealed to teachers to refrain from actively engaging in political activities and warned that the union will not stand for any teacher that shall be found wanting.
The ZNUT District Chairperson also urged politicians not to use teachers in their campaigns because the teaching profession risked losing the confidence of the people.
He also called on political leaders to conduct their campaigns in a peaceful manner ahead of the January 20, 2015 presidential by election.
