A 22-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour by the Solwezi Magistrate’s Court for attempted rape.
The court heard that on October 6 this year in Solwezi, Venus Mapela attempted to have unlawful carnal knowledge of a woman without her consent.
Delivering judgment, resident magistrate Maxwell Mainsa said the State proved its case against Mapela beyond reasonable doubt.
Mr Mainsa said there is no danger that Mapela was falsely implicated in the case.
“I will send you to prison for 18 months with hard labour so that you can learn to control your sexual appetite since there are no women in prison,” Mr Mainsa said.
He granted Mapela leave to appeal to the High Court within 14 days.
During trial, the woman testified that on the material day, she boarded a bus in the central business district on her way home and she disembarked at a bus-stop called Complex.
The woman testified that she started walking home and realised that a man was following her.
She testified that the man grabbed her by the neck, covered her mouth and pushed her to the ground.
The woman told Mr Mainsa that Mapela beat her up and told her that he wanted to have sex with her.
She recalled that she struggled with Mapela until two men approached and rescued her.
She testified that Mapela was stark-naked when he was apprehended.
