University of Zambia (UNZA) Chancellor Jacob Mwanza has appealed to government to increase the budgetary allocation to the institution in order for it to mitigate the many challenges it is facing.

Dr Mwanza noted that the current allocation to the institution was not sufficient to ensure smooth operation of the highest learning institution in the land.

He said student accommodation and bursary are among the various challenges the school was grappling with.

Dr Mwanza further appealed to government to help UNZA improve its financial position in order to meet its growing financial obligations.

He however praised government for the on-going construction of student’s hostels which he said will greatly help in alleviating the accommodation crisis at the institution.

Dr Mwanza was speaking during the 44th graduation ceremony of 5, 964 students at the UNZA Great East Road Campus in Lusaka today.

Speaking earlier, UNZA Vice Chancellor Steven Simukanga disclosed that UNZA will next year embark on the construction of a Special Education Learning Center under the School of Education for physically challenged persons.

Prof Simukanga said the learning center will greatly change the lives of physically challenged children as it will have appropriate infrastructure and teaching aids to cater for their requirements.
