The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Eastern Province has arrested and separately charged two Lusaka women for trafficking in 602 bundles of miraa weighing 212.4 kilograms.
Joyce Nakanyika, 49, a peasant farmer of Mandevu Compound in Lusaka has been arrested for trafficking in 317 bundles of miraa weighing 106kg while Mayies Ofwa, 51, of the same abode has been arrested for trafficking in 285 bundles of miraa weighing 106.4kg.
DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo said in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today that the duo was intercepted at Luangwa Bridge.
And in a related but separate incidence, the Commission in Muchinga Province has arrested and jointly charged two male Tanzanian nationals and two female Zambians for trafficking in 40 bundles of miraa.
Rashid Bakari Mbaruku, 20, of Tanga area in Tanzania has been arrested and jointly charged with Hassan Athumawi, 34, a Cook of the same abode, Miniva Nansungwe, 23, a house wife of Mukoma village and Carol Kalemwa, 22, a house wife of Chiyanga village in Nakonde District for trafficking in 40 bundles of miraa weighing 16.2kg
Meanwhile, the Commission has arrested 47 people countrywide for trafficking in various quantities of cannabis.
Ms Katongo said those arrested and jointly charged include Elijah Nguni, 19, a Taxi driver of Kamwanya compound in Mpika, Leonard Sakala, 28, of Kawama Township in Ndola, Gift Mumba Kangwa, 23, a pupil of the same abode for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 58.3kg.
Others arrested are Chris Chibwe, 28, and Dick Shapi, 25, both of Zambia Compound in Chililabombwe for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 15.7kg and 12.8kg respectively and Andrew Chisola, 34, of Old Ndeke Township in Kitwe for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 2.6kg.
Ms Katongo said in North-Western Province, the Commission arrested Willy Kawawa, of Nyinyoni area in Mwinilunga District for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 7.3kg.
She said all suspects will appear in court soon.
