80-percent of Zambian prisoners are HIV positive

Commissioner of Prisons PERCY CHATO says 80-percent of prisoners in Zambia are HIV positive. Mr. CHATO says the HIV and AIDS prevalence is even higher among female inmates.

He attributed this to over-crowding. Mr. CHATO was speaking during the High Level Advocacy meeting on Prison Health Systems at Chaminuka Lodge in Chisamba Central Province.

And speaking at the same function, National AIDS Council Director General JABBIN MULWANDA said very little investment has been done to improve the health of prisoners.
