THIRTEEN people who illegally constructed houses in Kitwe’s Mindolo North township have been arrested for criminal trespass.
A combined team of officers from Kitwe City Council (KCC) and Zambia Police yesterday swung into action demolishing illegal structures in Kitwe’s Mindolo-North township.
Early this year, KCC demolished over 600 illegal structures in the area but some people have moved on site to reconstruct the houses.
The local authority has since issued offer letters to the 200 residents whose houses were demolished and relocated them to Kitwe East across the Kafue River.
Kitwe Town Clerk Bornwell Luanga said in an interview yesterday that officers from the Zambia Police and KCC demolished 35 illegal structures and arrested 13 people for trespassing.
“We have taken steps to control the construction of illegal structures in Mindolo-North.
Just this morning, we apprehended 13 people and demolished 35 incomplete illegal structures in the area,” he said.
Mr Luanga also said Zambia Police officers will camp in Mindolo North to ensure that people resume the illegal construction of houses.
He said the local authority has also carried out its investigations and discovered that there is a person who is actually encouraging people to continue building houses on the same piece of land.
