Police in Serenje district in Central Province have arrested two brothers of Lumpampa area in Serenje District for forcing their 57 year old grandmother to seat on a hot brazier as they suspected her of practicing witchcraft.
Central Province Commissioner Standwell Lungu confirmed the incident to ZANIS today.
Mr Lungu named the suspects as Gift Chibale 26 and Ofread Chanda 24 both of Mupeta village of Lumpampa area in Serenje district.
Mr Lungu said Chanda and Chibale on Sunday around 17:00hrs asked Belina Mupeta to either seat on a hot brazier or be killed for practicing witchcraft.
He said the grandmother sat on a brazier for fear of being killed and sustained serious injuries on both buttocks and tights.
Mupeta is currently nursing the wounds in Serenje District Hospital.
Mr Lungu said police will ensure peace prevails in the country by not sparing anyone who takes the law in their own hands.
The Central Province Police Commissioner further said Chanda and Chibale have since been charged with the offence of Grievous Bodily Harm and will appear in court soon.
In another related development a 58 year old man of Zambia Compound has committed suicide after a domestic dispute with his wife.
Central Province Police Commissioner Standwell Lungu confirmed the incident and named the deceased as Brown Chintu, a former Community Crime Police Unit (CCPU) officer.
Mr Lungu said the deceased was found by passers-by in the early hours of yesterday hanging from the roof of the veranda of his house.
Mr Lungu said the cause of Chintu’s death is not yet known.
He has however advised people to share their problems with others as opposed to taking their lives.
“People should not to take their lives as it is not the solution but they should instead share their problems with others," Mr Lungu said.
However, the body of the deceased is lying in Serenje District Hospital mortuary awaiting burial.
