Mob justice attempts to attack police in Mwense
Mansa, October 16, 2014ZANIS—An angry mob yesterday attempted to attack police officers in Mwense district after the officers tried to rescue a truck driver who ran over a 30 year old man.
This was after the truck driver only identified as Donald n employee from the Ministry of Health in Mwense district who run over a man identified as James Chishimba.
The incident happened when the driver of a Tata light truck registration number AAM 5404 hit the man who died on the spot along the Katuta Kapemba Road in Bernard Malama Village.
Luapula Province Police Commissioner Malcolm Mulenga said the deceased was trying to cross the road.
Mr Mulenga said this angered the villagers in the area who tried to attack the driver but he managed to escape.
He said the mob surrounded police officers who had rushed to the accident scene and later blocked the road and removed tyres from the accident vehicle.
Mr Mulenga said the police officers were only rescued by their fellow officers from the police station who rushed to the scene.
In another incident, police in Chiengi district are holding a man of Kabwe Village for gang raping a 28 year old woman of the same village.
The police commissioner said the suspect was with five other men who took turns in raping the women.
Mr Mulenga said Sarah Mwewa 28 of Kabwe Village in Chief Mununga’s chiefdom was raped around 23:00 hours at Kangungwa Fishing Camp by the suspect identified as Steven Kalumba and five other unknown persons who are on the run.
He said this was after Mwewa went on a drinking spree with the six who later took advantage of her drunken state and raped her.
The police chief said Kalumba was arrested and is in police custody while the others are still on the run.
