Government has directed the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to ensure that cost effective tariffs in the energy sector are attained.
Mines, Energy and Water Development Minister Christopher Yaluma says attainment of cost reflective tariffs is cardinal in attracting more investment in the energy sector.
Mr Yaluma urged ERB to ensure that it effectively implements the set objectives of its strategic business plan intended to provide a strategic direction in the execution of the mandate of the ERB.
The minister said he expects the energy regulator to enhance it regulatory frame-work which should spur improvements in infrastructure and services from filling stations, fuel transporters, electricity and petroleum utilities and other licensees.
ZANIS reports that Mr. Yaluma said this last night when he launched the ERB 2014 to 2016 Strategic Business Plan in Lusaka at Radisson Blu Hotel.
He observed that the energy sector in the country is currently facing a lot of challenges especially in the electricity and petroleum sub-sectors.
The Minister assured ERB that government will provide all necessary support to ensure that it carries out its mandate.
Mr Yaluma called on the ERB to ensure that efficiency and competitiveness flourishes in the energy industry and work towards promoting the participation of Zambians in the industry.
And ERB Board Chairperson Geoff Mwape said the energy regulator is committed to achieving increased compliance by licensed entities in order to improve viability in the energy sector.
