A MAN of Kabulamena in Senior Chief Sikufele’s area in Kabompo is nursing gunshot wounds after he attempted to escape from police officers, whom he had led for recoveries in the area.
The man has been identified as Sydney Saluhanga, aged between 18 and 22.
North-Western Province deputy commissioner of police Michael Nkaka confirmed the incident in an interview.
Mr Nkaka said police in Kabompo received a report of burglary and theft from Gift Fulayi, a businessman of Indeco township, that unknown people had broken into his house and allegedly stole money amounting to K5,900 and a Samsung Galaxy phone valued at K4,300.
He said based on the report, police instituted investigations and apprehended Saluhanga.
“The suspect is a habitual burglar, who was also serving a probation sentence at Sallnar Children’s Home and after police interrogations; he agreed to lead officers to the recovery of the items in Kabulamena.
“On the way back from Kabulamena, the suspect attempted to escape from police custody and the officers fired three warning shots in the air to stop him but he continued running away, hence the officers were forced to shoot him on the right leg and apprehended him,” Mr Nkaka said.
He said Saluhanga was rushed to Kabompo District Hospital, where he is admitted and his condition is stable.
Mr Nkaka said property valued at K4,950 and cash amounting to K3,920 was recovered from the suspect, who is expected to appear in court soon.
