THE construction of the US$50 million Lusaka’s Cosmopolitan shopping mall in Makeni which is anticipated to create 500 jobs is expected to be completed next year.
The shopping mall will have anchor retail shops from South Africa such as Shoprite, Game and Mr Price.
Lusaka mayor Mulenga Sata called on the company to prioritise employing locals especially in the non-technical jobs.
Mr Sata said at the ground breaking ceremony in Lusaka on Wednesday that the development will help service the area and decongest the central business district (CBD).
“I urge you citizens of Makeni area to guard the shopping mall [jealously], as it will help improve your lives in terms of employment and bring various goods and services closer to you,” he said.
Mr Sata said since 2011, the country has witnessed rapid growth in the social sector including the construction of roads, hospitals and schools.
The mall is being developed by a South African firm Cosmopolitan Shopping Centre Limited.
At the same occasion, Cosmopolitan Shopping Centre Limited director Steven Herring said the development is expected to create about 1,000 temporary and 500 direct jobs once the project is completed.
Mr Herring said the development will not just decongest the CBD but will also make people more productive by spending less time when shopping.
He said the support received from the Zambia Development Agency, Lusaka City Council and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency has made the project successful.
“We all know Lusaka’s roads are congested, making access to the large malls on the Great East Road time-consuming to get [there], especially from places like Makeni, Chawama, Mimosa, Lilayi, John Howard and Chilanga,” he said.
Mr Herring said the mall, scheduled to open next year in November, will have tenants from fashion brands like Edgars, Legit and PEP, among others. It will also house banks, restaurants and other retail shops.
