UNDP commits to poverty reduction
Kabwe , September 4, 2014,ZANIS…………The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has reiterated its commitment to improving the living standards of Zambians as well as mitigating poverty in the country.
United Nations Resident Coordinator, Janet Rogan, who is currently in Central Province to have an on-spot check on the UNDP support programmes, says she is impressed with the determination Zambians have in improving the country’s economy.
She observed that Zambians are naturally hardworking people who have a great zeal in taking up informal businesses and thereby contribute to the country’s economy.
Speaking when she visited a widowed woman Blacksmith in Kapiri-Mposhi district, Ms Rogan said her organization is determined to share information on various developmental issues with Zambians, especially those at the grass root level.
She advised Zambian women to emulate Mary Bwalya who has carried on with the Blacksmith family business started by her husband to support and sustain her family.
Ms. Bwalya is able to make braziers, pots and washing basins from metal scraps in the business that she took up after the death of her husband.
She said UNDP shall continue to support Mrs Bwalya with resources that will help her grow her business as well generate a sufficient income base that will see her and her children through.
