The Program Against Discrimination in Communities (PADIC) has commenced the establishment of a sugarcane plantation project in Shangombo district, Western province.
The NGO was given 3000 hectors of land by the Barotse Royal Establishment (BRE) where it has began constructing an initial 30 unit housing complex at Shandambi area.
PADIC Executive Director Sitali Sitali explained to ZANIS in Shangombo today that the organization is expected to build about 800 housing units in a period of 15 years.
Mr. Sitali said the organization will also commerce the construction of two 1X3 classroom blocks at Shandambi community school and a clinic next week under its social corporate responsibility programme.
He said the projet which will cost about US$500 million will benefit over 1000 local people through employment creation.
Sinjembela Member of Parliament Poniso Njeulu expressed gratitude at the commencement of works at the sugar plantation.
Mr. Njulu who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister said the Sugarcane Plantation project could not have come at a better time.
The MP however caution constructors who will be engaged in various construction projects against neglecting the safety of workers that will be employed.
