NORTHERN Province Gender and Child Development Coordinator Motion Milambo has warned that parents forcing their girl children into early marriages risk facing the wrath of the law.
Mr Milambo was speaking at the Council Chamber in Nsama district when he addressed over 28 village headmen from the area.
Mr Milambo said it was sad that most girls were being married off at an early age instead of being in school.
He told the village headmen that early marriages posed a great danger and put the lives of the young girls at risk adding that the practice was considered a criminal offence punishable by law.
Mr Milambo revealed that village watch groups would soon be formed in all villages in Nsama to ensure that cases of early marriages and child abuse are promptly reported to the relevant authorities.
And Roma village headman Kennedy Nsama commended the ministry of gender for the sensitization programme.
He assured Mr Milambo that the headmen would work with government officials to protects the rights of children especially girls.
Mr Nsama said the importance of girl children education in society cannot be overemphasized.
The provincial gender and child development coordinator was in Nsama to sensitize the community on the dangers of early marriages.

Mitete has potential food production
Mitete, July 1, 2014, ZANIS—Mitete District Agricultural and Commercial Show Committee Chairperson Charles Chizuwo says the district has massive potential for food production.
Mr Chizuwo said this today in an interview with ZANIS in Mitete District of Western Province.
He said rice, bananas, wheat and Pineapple plantations are some of the massive potential food production sectors due to the abundant water resources in the district.
The chairperson said this will translate into creation of employment for the young people.
He has since appealed to the District Commissioners’ Office and to the District Agricultural Coordinator DACO to market the district to potential investors who can start these plantation schemes in the district.
Mr Chizuwo said the district wants agriculture shows to be celebrated in the years to come to be bigger and better.
Mr Chizuwo added that the district and the line Ministry also faces a lot of challenges such as lack of transport for their easy and effective transfer of extension services in the district.
He said Government should consider providing officers in the department of agriculture with a speed boat, vehicles and motor bikes for them to work effectively.
He mentioned other challenges as those of office space and houses for the agricultural assistants in the various camps saying at the moment the district has only one camp house in Muyondoti out of 16 camps.
Meanwhile, Mitete District Commissioner Teddy Chimbinde said Government under the Constituency Development Fund CDF has allocated funds to construct two camp houses at Mataba and Sikunduko Agricultural Camps.
Mr Chimbinde said works on the two camps houses will commerce soon.
