Government has reiterated the importance of strengthening regional mechanism for the effective resolution of conflict on the African continent.
Foreign Affairs Minister Harry Kalaba says this will help the African Union (AU) attain its vision for an integrated, people centred and prosperous Africa.
According to a statement made available to ZANIS by Zambian Embassy in Ethiopia, Mr. Kalaba said this on the side-lines of the AU Summit in Addis Ababa.
Mr Kalaba told the gathering that was attended by heads of state and government and chaired by Yoweri Museveni that without peace and security, there can be no meaningful development in Africa.
He said food insecurity and youth unemployment, among other vices, are some of the major challenges to the peace and security that the African people yearn for.
Mr Kalaba expressed concern at the many wars that are raging in Africa saying they were a draw back as they affected international trade.
The Minister also held a bilateral meeting with the African Union Commissioner of the Peace and Security Council Ambassador Small Chergui.
