Open Society Foundation (OSF) has endorsed the proposal by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to increase the number of constituencies countrywide from the current 150 to 235 following President Michael Sata’s decision to establish 29 new districts.

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has proposed an increase in the number of constituencies countrywide from the current 150 to 235 stating that there is need to adjust electoral boundaries to ensure all the new districts have at least one constituency and to realign the boundaries of wards and constituencies that have been affected by the creation of the new districts.

OSF Executive Director, Sunday Chanda, has told QFM News in a telephone interview that adjusting electoral boundaries will bring development closer to the people.

Mr. Chanda says this has been overdue and that there are limitations in taking development to the people more especially in newly created.

He notes that though this move will come with cost implications like the increase in Constituency Development Fund (CDF) from the current 150 constituencies to 235 constituencies; it is worth it because all the people will benefit from the developmental projects taking place in the country.

He furthermore notes that some constituency boundaries have been affected by the revised district boundaries.
