GOVERNMENT has come to the defence of the embattled Local Government
Service Commission (LGSC) saying it is still relevant to the cause for
which it was established.
Local Government and Housing Minister Emmanuel Chenda said disbanding
the commission was not the best option for now.
Mr Chenda, who was responding to questions from journalists in Kitwe on calls for the dissolution of LGSC by some local government stakeholders, who include councillors from various local authorities, said the commission was still critical in serving the purposes for which it was created.
Recently, there have been sustained calls for the dissolution of LGSC on grounds that the commission had ceased to serve the purpose for which it was created.
But the minister said the important thing to do for now was to deal with some of the short-comings that were being spotted as mistakes in the operations of LGSC.
‘‘Even when people have spotted mistakes in LGSC there are also a number of good things the commission has done and I think the best way to go about it is not to disband but deal with the short-comings within LGSC,’’ he said.
Mr Chenda said arising from the many misgivings on the LGSC, Government had already engaged the commission and given advice on some of the areas that needed improvement in its operations.
The minister was hopeful that the LGSC would be able to correct some of the mistakes and improve its performance so that it could effectively serve the purposes for which it was created.
