MINISTER of Youth and Sport Chishimba Kambwili has warned that youths that have defaulted to pay back loans under Youth Development Fund (YDF) risk being arrested.
“If you don’t pay back (YDF), its jail for you because if you pay back, we will create a pool of money for us to give more youths. You can run but you can never hide. We will advertise in the papers that you are wanted men for the theft of youth fund,” Mr Kambwili said.
He said this in Kabwe last Thursday when he addressed youths at the conference hall where he also outlined youth empowerment programmes that the Patriotic Front (PF) administration is implementing.
The minister said Government is aware that youths are important stakeholders in national development and is implementing programmes to empower and integrate them fully into socio-economic development.
Mr Kambwili said since the PF was elected in 2011, it has disbursed K23,188, 869.90 to 700 youth groups and associations.
He also said YDF has created 1,200 jobs for the youths, adding that more jobs are yet to be created.
Mr Kambwili said Government wants YDF to grow because it is a revolving fund so that many youths can access empowerment funds.
Mr Kambwili said Government wants YDF allocation to increase and possibly lead to the establishment of a youth fund in future.
He implored youths to develop bankable business proposals, which they will use to access t YDF.
Mr Kambwili said the PF administration wants youths countrywide to access YDF regardless of their political affiliation unlike the manner the MMD administered Youth Empowerment Fun.He said to disburse YDF transparently, Government has constituted multi-sectoril technical committees in provinces that recommend individuals or organisations eligible to access funding.
He said in 2012, was disbursement K11 million, K19 million in 2013 and K20 million in 2014.
He said because of the demand for the funds, Government has requested for an additional K10 million.
“So, if we get more money, some of these issues of youth unemployment will come to an end. This money is meant to give micro loans from K1, 000 to K 50,000 to either individuals or organisations,” Mr Kambwili said.
He also urged youths to venture into viable businesses that will enable them generate funds so that they can pay back the loans.
