Those that have already received their letters include the Foundation for Democratic Process, Transparency International Zambia, Civil Society for Poverty Reduction and Action Aid Zambia.
The NGOs have been given thirty days by the Registrar of NGOs to show cause why they should not be de-registered for non compliance with the NGO Act.
According to a letter written to the affected organizations dated 12th May, 2014 obtained by QFM News, the Registrar has reminded the organizations that the NGO Act prohibits persons from operating organizations that are not registered in accordance with the Section 10 of the NGO Act.
Mr Phiri says despite the extension for the registration of NGOs which expired on 5th May,2014, FODEP knowingly failed or neglected to register or commerce the registration process with the department of registrar for NGOs.
But FODEP Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi says his organization is not interested in registering under the draconian Act and therefore ready to face the consequences in its fight for civil and political liberties in the country.
