A Zambia Wildlife (ZAWA) Kalabo District Ranger has been shot in Liuwa National Park in Kalabo District of the Western Province.
ZANIS reports from Kalabo District that both Kalabo District Commissioner Maseka Chinyama and African Parks Operation Manager Simon Pitt confirmed the development in separate interviews.
The duo named the deceased as Dexter Chilunda.
They said Mr. Chilunda died on the spot in a cross fire with suspected poachers in the heart of the park today.
The District Commissioner feared that the death of a ranger in the district, he said was first of its kind, indicated that the fight against poaching in Liuwa was still to be achieved.
The District Commissioner who described Mr Chilunda as a dedicated employee , explained that the shooting dead of a Ranger would only trigger fear in the other remaining scouts in the area.
The body of the deceased is lying in Kalabo District Hospital awaiting postmortem and burial.
