THE Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health has said people in Chipata District are still consuming the highly potent spirits popularly known as ‘Tujilijili’.
Chipata District medical office planner Yolani Banda told an Eastern Province Epidemics Preparedness, Prevention, Control and Management meeting in Chipata on Tuesday that the banned alcohol sachets were still in stock in the district.
Mr Banda suspected that the spirits were coming from Malawi, where they were still manufacturing them.
“Some people in most parts of town are accessing the beer and are taking it knowing that it is illegal. We suspect that ‘Tujilijili’ are coming from Malawi,” he said.
Chipata District Commissioner Kalunga Zulu said he was aware that some traders have stocks of the banned alcohol.
Mr Zulu said there was need to engage the Malawian authorities in order to arrest the situation.
“I am aware that ‘Tujilijili’ are still in stock in the district and of late I have seen the empty plastics sachets,” he said.
Mr Zulu suspected that people who were trading in the banned sachets, were using alternative routes known as Zalewa to smuggle them into the country.
He appealed to the officers at Mwami Border post to be alert on the matter.
In 2012, the Zambian Government banned the manufacture and sale of the spirits usually distributed in sachets and commonly known as ‘Tujilijili’.
