Zambia Railways Limited says the level of vandalism on the Copperbelt is alarming.
Zambia Railways Police Regional Commander, Kebby Kabindama says the vandalism is largely driven by scrap metal dealers where the anti-theft squad is recovering tonnes of rail property.
And Company Spokesperson, Benson Ngula says the railway company needs over 41 Million US Dollars to completely replace the infrastructure.
MR. Ngula says inter- mine connectivity has faced huge challenges as railway tracks such as those in Luanshya have completely been uprooted.
This came to light during a tour of infrastructure by the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Works, Supply and Communications.
Committee Chairman, Kapembwa Simbao has urged the institution to be strict on individuals attempting to encroach on the company’s land.
Mr. Simbao says Government is working hard to improve the railway sector adding that vandalism should not derail the much needed progress.
